Finding Answers for our Grandchildren

I was very fortunate to raise two healthy children. Both had extensive ear infections and needed tubes, and my daughter was a bit of an adventurer and kept the road to the ER warm, but neither ever had any medical issues that caused us concern.

My grandchildren, for the most part, are also healthy. My 8-year-old granddaughter has an internal and external allergy to eggs. She requires an epi pen, and my son and his family have created a completely egg-free environment for her. They are very strict about her exposure to any possible contamination. When we visit, we adhere to their efforts to keep her safe and healthy.

My friend Pam Kuper, like her son and daughter-in-law, was afraid and confused when her grandson was diagnosed with autism. But Pam isn’t your ordinary grandma, and her friend Cheryl Yancey, an educator, isn’t your normal bestie. This week’s podcast features Pam and Cheryl, who turned a personal challenge into a powerful mission. Pam and Cheryl founded ASSIST (Achieving Success through Support, Individualized Service, and Training), a nonprofit that helps families of children with disabilities access vital support and resources beyond what traditional systems offer.

Our discussion covers the obstacles Pam’s family faced, the support ASSIST provides, and their goal to expand its reach nationwide, especially to grandparents helping raise their grandkids.
