You really, genuinely don't realize what a small world it can be, but it is. In 1992, we were living in San Diego. Word got out that the naval base there was hosting Garth Brooks for a free concert open to everyone. This was the old days, folks. There was no internet for purchasing tickets; you either had to call or visit a ticket office. I left early from home on a Saturday morning to get in line at Grossmont Center Mall, the nearest site with these golden tickets.
As I got in line, a tall brunette with long hair got in line behind me. I loved that she was about my height and immediately struck up a conversation with her. I wasn't able to secure tickets that day, as the line took longer than my babysitter was available. However, I made a friend for life in Cindy Dixon.
As we talked, we quickly realized she was from the St. Louis area, a Cardinals fan, and a Mizzou fan. We were instant friends. We started hanging out a lot; she got to know my son, and in the ultimate friend move, she offered to join me when I gave birth to my daughter, while my husband was (altogether now!) deployed. She was a fantastic birth coach, and I'll never be able to thank her enough for being there with me. We were both shocked that the little boy I was supposed to be having was a girl, and she helped me pull on her little blue sleeper that I brought from my son's box of baby clothes. Ah, modern medicine.
Anyhow, now, she's back in Missouri, after becoming a Physician's Assistant (did I mention she's way smarter than I am?), and we have stayed friends over the years. We don't get to spend nearly enough time together, but I love her and am so glad she's in my life.
Cindy loves to travel and especially loves what, to me, is adventure travel - hikes, mountain climbing, outdoor experiences. She has visited many beautiful places and documented those visits with fantastic photography, including the photo at Grand Teton National Park that accompanies this post. I loved chatting with her about some of the trips she's taken. She frequently travels alone, and I appreciate the precautions she takes so that she can enjoy herself and destress in the most beautiful parts of our country.
Thanks for listening!
