Many aspects of life have become easier thanks to the internet, including researching our family origins. You can take a swab, mail it to a company, and they'll link your DNA to people across the world who are part of your family. Ancestry is the topic of podcasts and even TV shows, with celebrities learning the truth about their background.
My friend Rachael Carroll, whom you met on an earlier podcast, began researching her family history at the age of 12 as part of a school class assignment. She had no idea where this journey would take her. Most families have secrets, many that stay that way, but some come to light and serve as a bridge to telling a family's story.
When Rachael and I completed recording this episode, I asked her if she'd seen the Disney movie "Coco." She hadn't. I insisted she see it because her story reminded me so much of the "Coco" storyline. She watched, agreed, and shed tears like I do every time I watch.
