Not all women are blessed with a circle of good and true friends that are smart, ambitious, and incredibly fun, but I am one of those lucky souls. My friend Dr. Mary Margaret Carrillo and I go back over 20 years, and though our journeys have taken us different directions, we've stayed good friends.
When she shared that her Master's Degree wasn't enough and she was pursuing a Doctorate, I didn't even blink. Nothing is beyond her reach. I was proud to be there when she received that degree at Southern Methodist University in 2023, and I've enjoyed watching each step as she's established the Latina Voices Institute. LVI empowers Latinas through education, culture, and community engagement, providing learning opportunities, fostering leadership, and creating spaces, like the Latina Voices Forum, where Latinas and allies gather to celebrate culture, leadership, and authentic stories. LVI's work is about more than individual success; it’s about building pathways for Latinas to access higher education, develop leadership skills, and make meaningful community contributions.
Call me crazy, but even when we were co-Daisy Girl Scout leaders in 1999, I knew Mary Margaret had a bright future ahead. I'm happy to help amplify the message of her organization, and especially happy to catch up with my good friend.
