Understanding the Homeless

Being a volunteer in your community pays dividends that are difficult to quantify. From the time I was a kid, my family and I gave our time to events and organizations and made some great memories. When my husband and I set off for our Navy adventure, we'd volunteer for family events on base. When we started a family, we took our kids with us, and then did our part to support them through being scout leaders, sports coaches, and classroom volunteers. My kids have spent hours helping with charitable events, helping raise money and awareness for organizations helping those in need, be it food, a home, or assistance with medical issues.

This Wednesday's podcast features my friend Alice Stanton, whom I've known for over 25 years (and met when she was volunteering with Little League), and my new friend Chris Payton, who serves as a grant writer for our local homeless shelter. I wanted to give them a forum to help all of us understand not just how our local shelter works, but to appeal to all of my readers and listeners to better understand how our fellow citizens might find themselves in need of a hand up.
